Finally, southern England is getting rain after five heatwaves and 59 days of drought. Farmers have been forced to use winter feed stocks, while crops have been devastated. Across Europe and North America, wildfires have raged. Now, as summer ends, another climate threat is emerging: destructive flash floods, including devastating flooding in Nepal, possibly triggered by a collapsing glacier and linked to our changing climate.
Western Europe had its hottest June-July period on record, surpassing previous thresholds set in 2022 and the summer is not over yet! The hot, dry weather has affected food production, people’s health and our water supply with empty reservoirs.
In the UK we largely rely on artificial fertilisers made from fossil fuels. The Government has singularly failed to develop a strategy for providing an alternative source for industrial manufactured imported fertilisers.
Renewable energy must be deployed at an even faster rate to avoid greenhouse gases such as methane and CO2 polluting and heating atmosphere even further.
The outcome of the US election is a tragedy for those suffering from floods and drought around the world. It will have disastrous consequences for the natural environment and efforts to stem the relentless rise in global warming sea and land temperatures.
